In this interview, Victoria shares what it was like to teach in Texas, where she was pressured to pass football players who were failing, expected to chase students down for missing work so no one would receive a zero, and told in subtle and not-so-subtle ways that graduation rates mattered more than standards. She describes standing in front of intimidating seniors who towered over her and made her feel unsafe, while serious behavior issues received little meaningful support.

She was handed classes with limited resources, no real curriculum, and almost no preparation time. Students with massive ability gaps and significant behavioral needs were pushed into mainstream classrooms without the specialized support they required. She was expected to teach grade-level content to students who were years behind, without the staffing, structure, or time necessary to help them catch up.

At the same time, instructional coaches hovered and critiqued without offering practical solutions, and principals focused on small details while ignoring the larger dysfunction. Co-teachers were unreliable. Policies were inconsistent. Parents were disengaged. The pressure was constant.

Victoria began waking up in the middle of the night with anxiety. She felt responsible for outcomes she did not have the power to control. Over time, she realized that the system was built to protect appearances, not teachers and not even students!
