Описание: The hike up to the Monastery, better known as Ad Deir Monument, in the rock city of Petra is certainly a must when traveling in Jordan. 800 steps have to be climbed. On a trail that leads continuously up to 220 meters above sea level. But at the top, one of the largest structures of the entire complex awaits you. With an impressive height of 45 meters and a width of 50 meters, Ad-Deir is twice as wide and 5 meters higher than the Treasury House. In the middle of the 1st century AD, the building was hewn out of the mountain with simple tools. Hard to believe when you stand in front of it.
Even though Monastery would mean monastery and in the Middle Ages monks actually lived here, the building is actually a burial place. The name Monastery comes from crosses carved into the wall inside, which testify to Christian use in Byzantine times.
In 2004, two stone benches buried by rubble were discovered along the walls of the hall. These suggest that Ad Deir served as the mausoleum of a ruler. An inscription suggests a reference to the cult of the Nabataean king Obodas I.who had ruled at the beginning of the 1st century BC, without the exact connection becoming clear.
Where is the Monastery Trail located?
In order to reach the beginning of the Monastery Trail, you have to walk all the way to the other end. This alone takes 60 minutes from the entrance at the Visitor Center, if you don't stop along the way. At the end of the frontage road there is a larger restaurant on the right, The Basin. Behind it there is a rather inconspicuous path. And that's exactly where you have to go.
Once you reach the bottom of the 800+ steps, it will take you about 45-60 minutes to get to the top. Depending on how fit you are and how often you stop to take photos. So in terms of time, the hike is very similar to the Indiana Jones Trail.
Keep in mind: From the Visitor Center it takes more than an hour and a half (usually more) to get to the Ad-Deir Monastery. The Siq itself at the beginning is already 1.2 km long. When you are there at the end, you are standing in front of the treasure house. And from the treasure house to the lower end of the trail it is also another 2 km. So that's quite a stretch.
