In this video knifemaker Walter Sorrells shows how steel can be "spark tested" to narrow down (if not precisely identify) its type and composition. Spark testing is done by analyzing the sparks thrown out when a sample piece of steel is ground on a grinder. Spark testing is often used by knife makers to identify whether a piece of salvaged steel is suitable for knife making or not.
