I wish to extend a tera thank you to the cool people at SciLab Secrets and the Battle Network Collectors' Discord, especially Netto and Zarch for not only giving me Navi data to play with... but for pointing me in the right direction towards figuring out how to simulate Battle Chip input as well!
TL;DR, Zarch knew where this dump stashes the data for the slotted in Battle and Navi data chips. I wanted to see if I could modify the file for the Battle Chip data, and surprisingly it worked.
With the power of unga bunga hex editing, I managed to simulate having a set of chips slotted into a BCS cab!
So, with our powers combined, it's time to show you guys what makes BCS really, really cool:
When you Slot-In a Navi data chip during character selection, the game will pull the Navi character, their level, and their Operator's name from the chip. (The Operator name is set via the Link PET_EX. If you've yet to do this, your name will just be set as "?????" in BCS.) This way, you can utilize the characters you've been raising via the Link PET_EX! As the game cautions: don't remove your Navi data chip during your play session; this chip is utilized all the way until the very end of the session, so be careful!
As for your Battle chips, these are inserted at the start of your first match of the play session. You're allowed to Slot-In up to 3 Battle Chips using the slots just above the cabinet's control panel. There's no chip class restrictions or anything so you're free to go nuts with your Slot-In choices: wanna pick 3 unga bunga Giga chips? Go ahead! You have a favorite Program Advance? Feel free to use it! You really like Roll and want to plug in a bunch of her Megas? Nobody's stopping you!
In this way, utilizing your own Battle Chip collection in BCS is kind of like utilizing the Regular system from the mainline games, in that you'll always have your favorite chip available in your opening hand. (Except in BCS' case, you get 3!) In TCG terms, you're always top-decking your favorite 3 chips. As such, this also VASTLY improves your damage output, making it far more consistent than praying to the Random Number Cybergods for a decent hand.
... Speaking of, how do you like mine? :3
Curiously enough, the version 3 title screen features Gregar Beast, Falzar Beast, and Beast Out Bass... but unfortunately, Megaman's Beast Out forms aren't playable! In fact, any attack that would summon a Navi that isn't playable (e.g., Blastman), whether via a Mega/Giga chip or a Program Advance, the attack animation omits their presence entirely. In other words, the other guys don't even show up or have any sprites!
... So imagine my surprise when I brought out Double Beast, and Gregar and Falzar Beast were properly animated! (As it turns out, these goobs don't just cameo in Double Beast either, they're hidden NPC opponents!)
I also brought along an Ice Seed since it's used surprisingly often in BCS' massive PA list, and I've noticed the game is kind of generous when it comes to dealing PAs at the start of each match. Sure enough, I managed to luck out and the game matched it with other PA components in both matches~
For reference: my potential Max Damage for both matches was 710 and 810 (not counting Perfect damage bonus increases), thanks to the game forming two PAs around my lil Ice Seed. ... that is a LOT of damage. (RIP Chargeman and Tomahawkman, neither of who survived to see Round 3. o7)
... and to think the game still had the audacity to give me a W Attack Chance after obliterating two-thirds of poor Tomahawkman's HP meter with that PA. That's even meaner than the Dark Chip I brou-
... I mean, what Dark Chip? I don't know what those are.
For the folks that brought their Navi data chips, once your matches are over, you're brought to a results screen that details and updates your Navi's win-loss record, their level and EXP, their HP, their Attack power, and their "Kokoro Points". (Kokoro Points, or, your Navi's soul or willpower, are a feature used with the Link PET_EX.)
This is followed by another screen if you happened to slot any physical Battle Chips for the first time into BCS: your Navi Data chip can also be used to track which physical chips you use with BCS! As per Tab's on-screen instructions, you can view this list via the "Album" feature by choosing the "No Battle" course at the start of a session.
When you're all done, the game will save your match and album data to your Navi data chip!
As Mr. Famous says, "Don't forget to remove your chips!"
"Come back and challenge again sometime!"
As of this writing, chip upload capability for the game dump is being worked on. While I have my workaround as you'll see in the vid, things aren't quite perfect yet. ... key word is "yet"!
Again, giga thank you to GoodTofuFriday, @scoutmasterdemi_gaming , and the super rad people at SciLab Secrets and the Battle Network Collectors' Discord. The ability to play this is mostly thanks to them!
Played via DEMUL. Version 3.
