Many firestarter tutorials rely on bushcraft gear or survival kits. This test focuses on three everyday items that most people already have at home: petroleum jelly, isopropyl alcohol, and acetone. Tested in a controlled outdoor environment, this experiment shows which one actually performs best when igniting real kindling.
All three firestarters were used with the same setup:
30ml of fuel
30g of dry wood chips
1 cotton ball
🔥 Results:
Isopropyl alcohol burns similarly but with slightly better consistency.
Acetone ignites instantly and burns the hottest, but may fail to light the wood fully.
Petroleum jelly (Vaseline) takes the longest to ignite but burns far longer- ideal for wet or cold conditions.
💡 Tip: 10g of petroleum jelly is more than enough per firestarter. Preload it onto cotton balls for your next legal campfire or emergency kit.
⚠️ Fire Safety Note:
This demonstration was performed in a controlled setting with wind control and safety gear on hand.
Check local laws before using flammable accelerants like alcohol or acetone as they may be banned in your area. Petroleum jelly may be permitted but should still be used responsibly.
Never attempt open flames in areas under fire bans or dry conditions.
Fully extinguish all fires and follow Leave No Trace principles.
