This is the first leg of my FAST Varanasi trip – the Festivals of Varanasi. Or to put it more simply, this is the F from the word FAST!!!

This is the year of the Coronavirus pandemic. A year when most of the public celebrations of festivals got canceled. However, not even the pandemic could stop the celebration of Dev Deepawali. The State Government has announced an all-out, huge celebration in 2020. This year our honorable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi attended the festival along with the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath.

DISCLAIMER: As a responsible traveler. I'll abide by all the precautionary measures as directed by the Government. I’ll be maintaining the mandatory social distancing norms. I am also carrying adequate supplies of masks and hand sanitizers. I shall be taking off my mask only when I have made sure that there is no one nearby.

I've always wanted to experience the grandeur of Varanasi & its celebrations.
Varanasi is known as the city of lights and the festival of Dev Diwali matches up with the name of the city. On this evening, the entire city shines like hundreds of Suns. The main center of attraction is the Ghats along the river Ganga. Each Ghat has a unique lighting setup and the magnitude becomes bigger and bigger each year.

History of celebration
Dev Diwali was first celebrated in 1915 at the Panchganga Ghat in Kashi. But it wasn’t till a few decades later till it became a big thing. A social worker named Narayan Guru started it from a few ghats by forming a group of locals. Gradually, the popularity of this festival started increasing.

The biggest highlight of the evening was the spectacular light and sound show on Chet Singh Ghat. A dazzling display of laser lights dancing to music for about 5 minutes. I was totally amazed and couldn’t help but marvel at the world-class presentation.

Looking at the festivities in the city of Varanasi, I can safely say that this was one of the biggest festivals of the year 2020.
