If you have sensitive hearing and prefer to keep your hearing as long as possible then having a pair of everyday carry earplugs is ideal. I carry it everywhere I go and I often use it whenever I encounter babies crying or kids shrieking. It takes the edge off of sharp ear piercing sounds and it can double as a sound reducer for loud settings like bars and loud restaurants.
