In this silent tutorial, surface water areas are extracted and calculated using Landsat satellite imagery and the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) in Google Earth Engine (GEE).
NDWI is applied to enhance water features and separate surface water from surrounding land cover. After generating the water mask, the total surface water area is calculated directly within the Google Earth Engine environment.
This workflow is useful for surface water mapping, wetland monitoring, lake and reservoir analysis, and temporal water change studies.
