Length: – 0:58 hr
In this episode of Saluting Their Service – Contemporary Voices of Bravery, Jason Isaac speaks with Andrea McMahon, whose remarkable 35-year career as an Australian Army musician broke barriers and reshaped leadership within Defence bands.
Andrea reflects on her early passion for music, beginning lessons at just seven years old before joining the Australian Army in 1983. She went on to make history as the first woman commissioned into an Australian Defence band, transitioning from performer to conductor and leader. Over the course of her career, Andrea served with Army bands across the country, instructed at the Defence Force School of Music, and ultimately became the Commanding Officer responsible for Army bands nationwide.
This conversation also explores Andrea’s continued service and dedication to supporting others. From representing Australia at commemorations such as ANZAC Day at Gallipoli to deploying with the Australian Army Band Sydney to Iraq and Afghanistan, Andrea shares the pride and purpose she found through service. Since transitioning from full-time Defence in 2017, she has continued contributing as a reservist and now serves as a Welfare Officer at Simpson Barracks, helping support the wellbeing of those still serving.
Andrea’s story highlights leadership, breaking new ground for women in Defence, lifelong service to community, and the importance of supporting those who serve both during and after their military careers.
