In Paris, it doesn't matter how corrupt the police are or how ruthless the mob is when you have swanky nightclubs and dapper clientele partying the night away. Melville's restrained directorial choices give way to occasional flourishes, as seen here. Of interest is that the plot involves no women at all, while they serve as a dancing backdrop or pictures in frames. The Santi club's three different floor shows interspersed throughout the film each tell a subtle background story.
