Описание: Firefighters battled a major 3rd alarm structure fire Saturday in the downtown district of South Orange, New Jersey, with heavy fire reported in a mixed-use building located at 51 South Orange Avenue above Chris’ Diner.
Initial crews arrived to find heavy fire conditions on the upper floors of the building, with flames extending into the cockloft area of the structure.

Firefighters began aggressive interior operations while truck companies opened the roof and checked for extension.

As fire rapidly spread through the upper portions of the building, conditions inside deteriorated quickly, forcing the incident commander to order multiple emergency evacuations of firefighters operating inside the structure.

During suppression operations, the roof of the building partially collapsed, creating a dangerous situation for crews working on the fireground.

Following the collapse and worsening structural conditions, command began transitioning operations to a more defensive strategy.

Multiple aerial apparatus were positioned around the building and ladder pipes were placed into operation, flowing large volumes of water onto the fire from above in an effort to knock down the heavy fire in the cockloft and roof area.

Firefighters from the South Essex Fire Department along with numerous mutual aid departments responded to the scene, operating handlines, aerial ladders, and truck company equipment as they worked to contain the blaze in the densely built downtown area.

Police closed portions of South Orange Avenue while crews operated, and firefighters remained on scene for an extended period conducting overhaul and checking for extension into adjoining structures.
