ISO 27001 is an international standard on how to manage information security. It specifies an Information Security Management System (ISMS) that organizations can establish, maintain and improve to better secure their data. The objectives of ISO 27001 are confidentiality, integrity and availability of data.

While compliance is voluntary, many companies see ISO 27001 certification as a way to increase sales by demonstrating a strong security posture to potential clients. ISO 27001 is more popular outside North America. The standard has 114 controls across 14 domains that organizations must fully implement to achieve certification. There is little flexibility to remove controls compared to SOC audits.

The ISO 27001 framework consists of an ISMS covering leadership, support and operational processes, as well as Annex A which defines 14 domains of controls. These domains cover information security policies, organization, human resources, asset management, access control, cryptography, physical security, operations security, communications security, system development and more.
