LAUREL, MD - The 13-year-old boy who died in a tragic multi-vehicle pileup on I-95 in Prince George’s County Tuesday was the son of a Baltimore rabbi and is being remembered for his dedication to helping other children with life-threatening illnesses.
Moshe Moskowitz died and his 45-year-old mother Tamara Moskowitz was critically injured when their Dodge van became involved in a collision between three other vehicles, including a tractor-trailer.
The accident happened around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday on I-95 N. near the exit with Maryland Route 200. It occurred when a Honda Pilot became disabled and stopped in a traffic lane.
As troopers were responding to the disabled car, four other vehicles collided. The Honda was in the roadway when Moskowitz’s car approached the Honda and a tractor-trailer hit the back of her car.
A white Volkswagen passenger vehicle was also hit as a result of the crash.
Moskowitz was transported to Medstar in the District with life-threatening injuries. Her son, Moshe, was flown to Children’s Hospital where he later died.
Moshe was an eighth grader at Baltimore’s Talmudical Academy where his father, Doniel Moskowitz, serves as a rabbi, according to the Yeshiva World News, which reports Baltimore’s large Jewish community is in shock.
The 13-year old was the youngest person to participate in a grueling 170-mile bicycle ride challenge during August that raises funds to support seriously ill children and their families to cope with life-threatening pediatric illnesses.
Moshe completed the Bike4Chai event on August 3 with his older brother.
Maryland State Police are continuing to investigate the accident that left I-95 shut down until 5 a.m. Wednesday. Two other people were injured and hospitalized.
