Gameplay of the hidden wrestler Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake in WWE Day of Reckoning for the Nintendo Gamecube.
Brutus Beefcake is a long-time friend of Hulk Hogan, supposedly being the reason that Hogan decided to get into body-building and eventually wrestling, so in many ways we have Brutus to thank for him. In their early, territorial days together, they portrayed kayfabe brothers, which apparently was so believable that for years people were confused to whether they actually were or not. With so many kayfabe and non-kayfabe siblings in wrestling, it's easy to understand why.
Brutus would eventually pair up with Greg Valentine in a tag team known as the "Dream Team", which lasted for about two years or so. I finally gave in and subscribed to the network (and was glad I did too, holy shit what a collection), so I was watching some of their old matches recently. This pairing would eventually split, and Brutus would turn face when he helped Piper to defeat Adrian Adonis, and would then cut Adrian's hair, leading him to earn the nickname "The Barber". After this, he would start carrying shears to the ring.
He's one of those guys who had one major gimmick he was known for, but also had other gimmicks down the line which people either forget or try to forget. When Hogan went to WCW, he used his star-power to get roles for his friends, and so of course Beefcake ended up joining the company too, eventually becoming part of the infamous Dungeon of Doom as his "Zodiac" gimmick, which is as bad as it sounds, only edged out perhaps by John "Earthquake" Tenta as "The Shark". He would leave WCW in late 1996, only to return in '98 as "The Disciple", Hogan's new bodyguard, who Hogan would use as muscle to interfere in matches for him. Which, you know, was the style at the time. This would eventually even include carrying and using the heavyweight belt when Hogan won it.
Brutus is...a little off, as I understand it, like many wrestlers from the classic era. He apparently managed to get the Boston subway system put on lockdown when working there when he accidentally left a bag of cocaine there and it was mistaken for anthrax. Wew lad. Bischoff seems to be really sour on the guy, for reasons he's never fully gone into for whatever reason. The fact that he was only kept in WCW for nepotistic purposes doesn't exactly say much to his character, I have to say, and he was probably one of the lesser draws of the classic era, but he was okay regardless. Not exactly a top draw but pretty memorable on the whole.
As an additional note, 15/16 years later and this soundtrack is still burnt into my brain, it's quite incredible.
Up next, the other half of the Dream Team.
