This episode shares what I learned from the book, "Game Changers: Stories of Hijabi Athletes from Around the World." The first athlete it talks about is Doaa Elghobashy, an Olympic Beach Volleyball Player from Egypt.
According to the book, when Doaa was 8-years-old, her dad introduced her to volleyball. He was a volleyball player himself. She fell in love with the sport. When she was 11-years-old, Doaa started to wear the hijab. As she got older, she transitioned from playing indoor volleyball to beach volleyball. Women beach volleyball players usually wear bikinis. That wasn't an option for Doaa. Instead, she helped advocate for Muslim hijabi women and girls to dress modestly while competing. Doaa was the first Olympic beach volleyball player to compete in the hijab! This was at the 2016 game in Rio de Janeiro. She represented Egypt.
In this video, I also go on a rant about how across so many cultures, girls and women playing sports is still pretty taboo, not just for Muslims. I bring up Netflix's, "Love is Blind: Habibi" to talk about Karma, the dancer on the show. She chose her passion for dancing over marriage and love. Her man didn't understand why.
I ask why traditional men chase women who have lifestyles they don't approve of. What's up with that?
