The Urwerk UR-10 SpaceMeter:
A Shockingly "Normal" Revolution
Get ready to have your preconceived notions of Urwerk shattered. For over two decades, the brand has been synonymous with radical, architectural watchmaking—think wandering satellite hours, rotating cubes, and cases that look like spaceships. So, what did they do for their latest release, the UR-10 SpaceMeter?
They made a watch with a round dial and central hands.
It's a move that has sent shockwaves through the indie watch world. At first glance, the UR-10 looks almost... conventional. But don't let its traditional facade fool you. This isn't just a watch; it's a philosophical machine, a "SpaceMeter" that measures your journey through the cosmos in a way only Urwerk could conceive.
The Concept: Measuring Space, Not Just Time
The heart of the UR-10 lies in its complications. While the central hands tell you it's 3:00 PM, the three subdials are busy calculating something far more existential: the immense distances you are hurtling through space without ever leaving your chair.
The concept is inspired by a 19th-century clock made by Gustave Sandoz, which was given to Felix Baumgartner’s father. Urwerk has miniaturized this complex astronomical tracking for the wrist.
Earth's Rotation: One subdial calculates the kilometers the Earth has spun on its own axis at the equator.
Earth's Revolution: Another tracks the staggering distance our planet has traveled on its orbital path around the sun.
It's a beautiful, poetic reminder that we are all passengers on a celestial body moving at mind-boggling speeds.
