In this presentation, scholar Nicola Lucchi speaks about Italian artists, who lived through the two decades of the Fascist regime by negotiating a shifting cultural landscape, in which modernist experimentation and conservative classicism were both selectively embraced by the state. Rather than imposing a single aesthetic doctrine, the regime sought to draw every artistic current into its orbit, forcing artists into varying degrees of circumspection, collaboration, or resistance. This lecture explores the careers shaped, sustained, or destroyed by that uneasy bargain between creativity and totalitarian power.
Nicola Lucchi, PhD, is the Director of Research and Education at Magazzino Italian Art in Cold Spring, NY, where he oversees the Library, the Fellowship Program and the museum’s publications, as well as the activities of its Education Center. His research has appeared in scholarly journals, edited volumes and exhibition catalogues, with a focus on Italian Futurism, the dialogue between poetry and the visual arts, and the work of Bruno Munari. Besides his scholarship, he has curated exhibitions on Futurism, political propaganda, avant-garde advertising posters, Italian interwar architecture and Piero Manzoni
This event is part of the online series "Flight or Fight. stories of artists under repression" organized by The Fritz Ascher Society for Persecuted, Ostracized and Banned Art in New York (https://fritzaschersociety.org).
