In May 1986, Bonanno boss Phillip Rastelli ordered a contract on mob associate Robert Capasio, assigning the task to Joseph “Joey Mook” D’Amico and Frank “Curly” Lino. On May 9, 1986, Capasio was in Manhattan with his friend Joseph Platia when Bonanno associate Steven "Stevie Blue" LoCurto lured him to a meeting in Brooklyn.
Stevie Blue drove Capasio to the waiting D’Amico and Lino, who carried out the hit. Realizing Platia would suspect foul play when Capasio didn’t return, Stevie Blue was ordered to eliminate him as well. That evening, Stevie Blue approached Platia, sitting in a car on 10th Avenue and 35th Street, and carried out the hit.
While fleeing, Stevie Blue was arrested minutes later with the g-u-n still warm in his pocket. Although he was acquitted on state charges, nearly 20 years later, federal prosecutors revisited the case, and Stevie Blue was sentenced to life in prison.
This story highlights how a single mistake can unravel even the most meticulously planned Mafia operations.
