What are VOCs, or volatile organic compounds?
VOCs are carbon-based chemicals. They have a high vapor pressure at room temperature, which means they can evaporate easily into the air we breathe. *Exposure to VOCs*, depending on the level and duration of exposure, can lead to *acute and/or chronic health effects including headache and irritation to eyes, throat, and respiratory systems, as well as developmental toxicity, cancer, and damage to organs and the central nervous system.
Sources of VOCs
Natural sources: plant decomposition, wildfire smoke, vegetation, micro-organisms
Man-made sources: vehicle emissions, vapes, household products/cleaners, 3D printers, building materials
We spend 90% of our time indoors, where pollutant levels can routinely be two to 10 times higher than the surrounding outdoor air. There can be thousands of different VOCs in the air in schools, offices and homes at any time. Improving indoor air quality is the key to protecting human health and well-being.
