USA - US Prolongs Iraqi Sanctions

The United States decided on Friday (13/10) to keep economic
sanctions imposed on Iraq for at least another year. US officials
made their decision after hearing the latest UN Special Commission
(UNSCOM) report on Iraqi arms stockpiles. US ambassador to the
United Nations, Madeleine Albright, called the report released on
Wednesday (11/10) "stunning" and said it showed that Iraq "cheated
and lied more than anybody suspected."

stunning report from chairman ekeus which from all indications
shows iraq has cheated and lied in terms of its dealings with
the UN and the international community, and given this double
dealing, I have to say that I would be very surprised if they
had given up their desire to give up weapons of mass
destruction or their habit of lying and cheating to the
international community. We have had this very sobering report
and the details are very stunning.

it is that its going to be necessary I think to consider some
assessment of the ongoing monitoring and verification system.
We are going to require from the Iraqis that this time they
really do come clean with the rest of the information that the
rest of the international community requires.

weapons programme which was conceptualised, researched and
developed and put into effect before the gulf war. The
programme contains both large-scale production of biological
warfare agents and also which is highly significant - that
these agents were put into delivery systems, into munitions,
bombs and long range missiles - war heads for long range
missiles. And furthermore, these weapons were deployed, brought
out for direct use at various launching points
