Karnataka Thali is a traditional, wholesome South Indian meal served on a platter, bringing together a variety of dishes that reflect the rich regional diversity of Karnataka. From steamed rice, sambar and rasam to vegetable curries, pooris or chapatis, curd, pickle, papad, and a sweet, the thali celebrates balanced flavours—mildly spiced, tangy, and subtly sweet—using staples like coconut, jaggery, and tamarind.

To experience an authentic Karnataka Thali, we visited the Karnataka Food Centre at the Delhi Karnataka Sangha, RK Puram, Delhi. Fondly known as the “Original KFC,” this iconic spot began as a small canteen in 1991 and, thanks to its loyal following, has grown into a popular 50-seater restaurant.

We ordered the Maharaja Thali, accompanied by refreshing buttermilk (majjige). The spread included puliyogare (tamarind rice), two fluffy pooris, steamed rice, shimla mirch pakoda, curd chilli, thondekai chana palya (ivy gourd and chana stir-fry), vegetable kootu, sambar, rasam, curd, chutney, lime pickle, happala (papad), kesari bath, and a sweet paan (sihi beeda).

Prepared simply and without heavy masalas, the meal was nutritious, comforting, and deeply satisfying. The service was prompt and efficient, adding to the overall experience.
