Every cycle has two stages: pre ovulation (follicular) and post ovulatary (luteal). But what really is luteal phase? And why does it matter?
The luteal phase is the second half of your cycle that happens after ovulation (aka when you’ve released the egg). The dominant hormone during this phase is progesterone, it is what starts to thicken up your uterus, in preparation for pregnancy or for your period.
If you are trying to get pregnant, this is important because it is what allows the embryo (egg and sperm) to implant in the uterus. If this doesn’t happen then your period will signal the end of the luteal phase.
Knowing more about your luteal phase can be a good indicator of your health. For example, short luteal phases have been associated with PMDD, PMS and early miscarriage. Your luteal phase ideally should be 11-17 days.
If your luteal phase is shorter than 11 days, you should talk to your doctor, and share your fertility goals to determine the best plan of action.
