Hindus offer prayers at temples to mark snake festival in India
Hindu devotees in different parts of India offered prayers to serpent god and milk to snakes as they marked 'Nag Panchami' or snake festival on Tuesday (August 02).
Priests at Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple in central Ujjain city bathed 'Shivalingam' (phallus representation of Hindu God of destruction Shiva) with ash, performed 'aarti' (holy ritual of lights) and placed the statue of 'Sheshnaag' (serpent god) in the temple as huge crowd of devotees reached the sacred place to worship.
In northern Prayagraj and Ayodhya cities, devotees offered milk and prayed at temples to seek blessings. Some devotees also fed milk to snakes on the occasion.
'Naag Panchami' is celebrated every year on the fifth day of the fortnight leading to the full moon, during the monsoon month of 'Shravan'.
On this day, worshippers observe a fast throughout the day and there is a general belief that feeding milk to snakes rids people of their problems.
People also avoid ploughing or digging the earth on this auspicious occasion as it could harm and anger the snakes which reside underneath.
