The Special Cell of Delhi Police has arrested eight persons for allegedly planning a major terror conspiracy in India with suspected links to Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba and operatives in Bangladesh. The arrests were made from Tamil Nadu and West Bengal after a 10-day anti-terror operation.
According to police sources, six accused — Mizanur Rahman, Mohammed Shabat, Umar, Mohammed Litan, Mohammed Shahid and Mohammed Ujjal — were arrested from garment manufacturing units in Tamil Nadu. Two others were held from West Bengal, including two suspects first detained in Malda. Their mobile phones were seized, and further analysis reportedly led to the arrests in Tamil Nadu.
Police said the accused were working in the garment industry and were allegedly using forged Aadhaar cards to hide their identities. They had also rented accommodation in Kolkata, which investigators believe was being used as a hideout. Several mobile phones and 16 SIM cards were recovered during the raids.
Officials said digital evidence suggests that the group was in touch through social media platforms and had suspected links with handlers based in Bangladesh and Pakistan. At least four of the accused allegedly conducted recce of sensitive locations in Delhi and later returned to Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Photographs of certain locations were found on their devices.
The operation began after “Free Kashmir” and “Stop Genocide in Kashmir” posters appeared at more than 10 locations in Delhi and Kolkata, including Metro stations, during an international summit in the national capital. Police suspect the arrested persons were involved in putting up the posters and had received funds from terror-linked sources.
Investigators have identified the suspected handler as Shabbir Ahmed, who is believed to be based in Bangladesh and earlier linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba. He was previously arrested by Delhi Police in 2007 and later went to Bangladesh after completing his sentence in 2019. Police claim he coordinated the module through contacts based abroad.
Sources said the group was allegedly planning attacks at prominent locations in Delhi, including the Red Fort, and other religious places. Officials are also examining possible links to recent international incidents. Further interrogation is underway to trace the full network and funding sources. Police said some suspects are still absconding and raids are continuing in multiple states as part of the ongoing investigation.
