In this video, we watch the pouring of a prototype Oldsmobile cylinder head designed by myself.
This cylinder head is poured out of Strontium Modified A356.1 Aluminum, both degassed and fluxed. The sand used to make the mold is a cold-set sand, (NOVASET), mixed with a Tinker Omega No-Bake sand system. The large two-man ladle holds 100lbs of aluminum, accompanied by the smaller 45 pound ladle. The violent bubbling seen after all of the aluminum is poured is called "outgassing". Gas is being expelled from the mold cavity as the molten aluminum reacts with the sand and binder.
This cylinder head was designed in Solidworks and resulted in a 55% casting yield, which has since been increased to 66%. I will make a follow up video soon highlighting the foundry tooling, the processes involved in manufacturing the tooling, and the full match-plate assembly.
Enjoy!
