The scene called for Gere to walk past the station and ignore the dog — but as they rolled, the dog collapsed off its mark.

Without thinking, Gere dropped to his knees, held the dog, and stayed in character – whispering softly.
The director kept the camera rolling. They used the take.

A crew member said:

“That wasn’t acting. That was Richard.”
