This round, or catch (as the terminology was at the time), was written by the English Baroque composer, the sublime, the immortal Henry Purcell (c. 10 September 1659 – 21 November 1695), -- composer of much gorgeous music including the opera "Dido and Aeneas."
The date of composition for this round is unknown, but whenever it was, it's clear is that Henry was having a Very Bad Day.
The lyrics are so vile and misogynist that I had to supply the unknown Julia with a response to Henry's scurrilous attack.
The lyrics are as follows.
Henry:
Once, Twice, Thrice, I Julia try'd,
The scornful Puss as oft deny'd,
And since I can no better thrive,
I'll cringe to ne'er a Bitch alive:
So kiss my Arse, disdainful Sow,
Good Claret is my Mistress now.
Julia:
Once, twice, thrice, Henry to me applied;
and wond’ring, “How many times must I tell you no?”
I thrice declined.
And since he went and put me in his song,
I think it only right to thus respond:
Go soak your head, thou braggart wight!
Yes, you and your claret can keep each other warm at night.
