I've told the story of the 2800 miles of driving on winding narrow roads and through some of the most spectacular Scottish scenery and history so I won't repeat it. I know you want to hear about the Springbank 15, a whisky that is so popular and yet so controversial and then so hard to find. This is my 2nd Springbank 15. The first one was a few years ago and it was excellent so of course it was hard not to indulge in and sadly I had finished it a couple years ago. I have had a couple Tens and several 14 year old's. All the Spring banks I have had would be the same old story but they are much harder to get today so I might have to drink them more sparingly in the future, (So I say). Interestingly I've never had a bad one. What is it about the 15 that gets so many reviews that can be all over the place. It is certainly a more complex whisky that might not suit everyone's palate and can be prone to Sulphur, no different than some other popular whiskies. So why have I NOT had a negative experience with Springbank? Is it my higher tolerance to Sulphur or have I just been lucky?
I have added a piece of video from my tour of the U.K. in the center of this review called "Some Random Bits of Our Scotland Tour". I add the extra video piece as a reminder that you should let the whisky from a newly opened bottle sit in a glass for a while and let it breathe. So the extra video is bits and pieces collected from the tour and put together like a mosaic. It is just a glimpse of our trip travelling through York, Edinburgh, the Highlands, Inverness, the Speyside, the Isle of Skye, Oban, the Kintyre peninsula, Glasgow and so on and so on. Springbank has become an enigma in recent years because the whisky is so hard to find. The other whiskies that Springbank produces, Longrow and Hazelburn are also hard to get. Kilkerran it seems is a little easier to find in Canada but that will probably not last. So you would think that the most sought after whisky in Scotland would cost a fortune but the distillery does not have exorbitant prices. It is the flippers and secondary market that jacks up the price. The issue with Springbank is they do not produce enough whisky for the global demand.
The following day after the tour I got to the distillery a couple hours early to be at the front of the lineup and it paid off. I got my Springbank 15, and a Longrow Palo Cortado cask strength. I had previously purchased a Springbank fourteen and had some sample bottles of Hazelburn Ten as well as the Springbank Ten so I guess I can say I had some success since very few bottles are available each day at the distillery (or anywhere else including Springbank owned Cadenheads). Some of the not so happy people in the line up behind me did not get a bottle.
