I gave him a simple question.
If you’re going to defend a text, you have to own what it says.
We looked at a verse that gives men permission to strike their wives under certain conditions. I asked him directly: is it ever morally acceptable for a man to strike his wife — or is the text wrong?
Those are the only two positions available.
What followed wasn’t anger. It wasn’t shouting. It was a refusal to dilute the logic.
If you believe a text is inerrant, you don’t get to defend it and then step back from its implications. You either own the entailment — or you don’t defend it.
