Having walked the coast to coast and more recently the South Downs way. I decided to rest my feet (somewhat) and jump back in the van. This time to experience the u.k.’s route 66. The Nc500. It's a 516 mile road trip of Scotlands most beautiful landscapes. Taking in the north coast 500 must sees. I love travelling, but this!…. This was something else!

You can do this road trip in as little as 5 days. I decided to stretch it out over 11. I wasn’t disappointed!
My journey starts en route to Inverness where the nc500 guide book suggests you start and finish. 1st stop. Falkirk to see the magnificent Kelpies. A recommended treat. Onto Inverness castle and then the outskirts to the ruins of fortrose cathedral. Spending time in the picturesque peninsular of Cromarty, visiting the groam museum. I found my first of a number of waterfalls at Rogie falls before, bedding down for the night. This was going to be an epic trip!
Onto Dunrobin Castle, the home of the Southerland clan and is the the oldest continually inhabited house in Britain. A stop off in Helmsdale, before heading off to Noss head lighthouse, a short walk away from a jewel in the crown at Castle Sinclair Girnigoe. Continuing north to everyones favourite. John O’Groats. Incidentally it is NOT the most northerly point of mainland uk. That title belongs to Dunnet head which is where I stopped off after visiting the mammoth Duncansby head stacks and the castle of May.
You have to cross the Kyle of tongue causeway. The vista was breathtaking. Moving on towards the smugglers paradise at Smoo cave. Before treating yourself to a world famous hot chocolate at Cocoa mountain. The stunning Sandwood bay. Muted to be the best beach in Britain is a 6.5km walk from the car park. but is is well worth it! the stunning valley where Loch Dubhaird mor is located is a dream to wake up to. After which The famous Kylesku bridge awaits. Before Lochinver there are more hidden beaches to navigate, so take your time on this section. Then journey up to the falls of Kirkaig. Walking there is a bit sketchy so be warned. Start the day with Loch Assynt and Ardveck castle. Some of the most beautiful draw dropping scenery I have ever had the honour of experiencing. Then onto Ullapool.The falls of Measach was my next destination. Gruinard bay, Gairloch and then into the vastness of the Torridon estate. Take your time here. Its too much to just drive through. The Applecross pass or Bealach na ba pass is a thought provoking stretch of road for vehicles over 16ft in length. If you are not confident. DONT DO IT. End the day at Strome castle before the last stretch from Lochcarron back to Inverness. Make sure you visit the midge bite cafe on this stretch mind.
My advice is get up there. Don't rush it. there are plenty of places I didn't go to. My Bad!
Is this the best stretch of road in the world?.... Its a contender!
