Hit my first squat of 405 lbs for 3 reps to wind up this heavy session today. I wanted to revisit and reiterate the importance of leveraging the connections between the framing of the mind (intent), the body (connected bone, muscle, tissue stretched via the breath), and the opening and closing of the body frame as a means to not only train these things - but express them in powerful movements, such as a heavy lift or a strike.
The open and close of the body is a fundamental aspect of training - in the shapes, vectors, and forms of the Taikyoku Kuzushi - opening and closing is found within every expression of movement along each vector theme. The carryover here as training for heavy compound lifts is that your connected body is strengthened via tough tissue, bone density, and whole-body muscle recruitment. The breath and connection training you do enables the ‘relaxed’ expression of this whole body power in a way that aligns well with combat sports’ need for precision, efficient use of energy, and the need to balance between explosiveness, strong postures, and technical training to apply your strengths under pressure, while minimizing the opposition’s ability to bring force against you.
The idea of heavy hands, “sitting down” on your punches, carrying the weight of the ground in your hands - all have significant overlap here.
