1. The Malacca Sultanate Era (1400 – 1511)
In the early 15th century, Parameswara (later known as Sultan Iskandar Shah) founded the Malacca Sultanate.
Malacca became a major international trading center and a hub for the spread of Islam.
Its governance was based on a feudal system, with the Sultan as the highest authority.
In 1511, Malacca was conquered by the Portuguese.
2. Portuguese Colonization (1511 – 1641)
The Portuguese captured Malacca under Afonso de Albuquerque.
They controlled the spice trade and attempted to spread Christianity.
Resistance arose from nearby Malay kingdoms such as Johor and Aceh.
3. Dutch Colonization (1641 – 1824)
In 1641, the Dutch, with assistance from Johor, defeated the Portuguese and took control of Malacca.
They monopolized trade but paid little attention to Malacca’s development.
Dutch rule eventually ended after the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824.
4. British Colonization (1824 – 1941)
The British began controlling Malaya through the Anglo-Dutch Treaty. Their administration developed in stages:
a) Straits Settlements (1826)
Malacca, Penang, and Singapore were combined into the Straits Settlements.
Penang (1786) and Singapore (1819) were opened as free ports.
b) Pangkor Treaty (1874)
The British intervened in Perak’s administration through the treaty.
The Resident System was introduced, giving British advisers power in Malay states.
c) Federated Malay States (1896)
Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, and Pahang were united under a central British administration.
d) Unfederated Malay States
Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, and Perlis came under British influence after the Bangkok Treaty of 1909.
5. Japanese Occupation (1941 – 1945)
On 8 December 1941, Japan invaded Malaya through Kota Bharu.
The Japanese ruled harshly, but nationalism among the locals grew stronger.
The people became more aware of the need for independence.
6. British Return & Opposition to the Malayan Union (1946 – 1948)
After Japan’s defeat, the British introduced the Malayan Union (1946):
It unified Malaya under a single administration.
It offered citizenship easily to immigrants.
The Malays strongly opposed it through the formation of UMNO on 11 May 1946.
As a result, the Malayan Union was replaced by the Federation of Malaya in 1948.
7. The Emergency & Communist Threat (1948 – 1960)
The Malayan Communist Party (MCP) launched an armed rebellion.
The British declared a state of emergency in Malaya.
The government and citizens worked together to fight communism.
8. The Road to Independence (1955 – 1957)
In 1955, the first general election was held.
Tunku Abdul Rahman became the Chief Minister.
A delegation led by Tunku negotiated with the British in London.
Finally, on 31 August 1957, the Federation of Malaya gained independence.
Tunku proclaimed “Merdeka!” seven times at Stadium Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur.
9. Formation of Malaysia (1963)
On 16 September 1963, Malaysia was formed with the participation of:
Malaya
Sabah
Sarawak
Singapore (which left on 9 August 1965)
10. Malaysia Today
Malaysia continues to grow as a sovereign, democratic, and multi-ethnic nation.
The history of independence struggles forms the foundation of its national identity and patriotism.
