Two Serious Faults:
1- Drivers must not continue at 40–60 mph on country roads when a horse rider is present. The law requires them to slow down to around 15–20 mph. In this case, the examiner reduce their speed appropriately.
2- The driver suddenly slowed down to follow the Borehamwood sign. On the motorway, where the speed limit is 70 mph, the driver should first use the left signal and slow down gently to warn the cars behind.
Scenario 1: Country Road with Horse Rider
Situation: Driver continues at 40–60 mph instead of reducing to 15–20 mph when passing a horse rider.
DVSA Requirement: Drivers must slow down, keep a wide berth, and pass carefully.
Correct Action: Reduce speed significantly (about 15–20 mph), keep distance, and be prepared to stop if necessary.
Result if driver failed to slow down: ❌ Serious fault (dangerous to the horse rider and failing to show due care). This would fail the test.
Scenario 2: Motorway Exit – Sudden Slowdown
Situation: Driver suddenly slowed down to follow a Borehamwood sign, without signalling or gradual reduction of speed.
DVSA Requirement: On motorways (speed limit 70 mph), drivers must signal early, check mirrors, move left safely, and reduce speed gradually when approaching an exit.
Correct Action: Use mirrors, indicate left in good time, then slow down smoothly.
Result if driver slowed suddenly without warning: ❌ Serious fault (lack of observation and planning, risk to following traffic). This would fail the test.
✅ Summary in DVSA test terms:
Scenario 1 (horse rider): Must slow to ~15–20 mph → otherwise serious fault.
Scenario 2 (motorway exit): Must signal and slow gradually → sudden slowdown is a serious fault.
