Harriet Tubman's life is a testament to courage and determination. Born into slavery around 1820 in Dorchester County, Maryland, Tubman, known as "Minty" to her family, endured brutal mistreatment and a traumatic head injury as a child.
Despite these hardships, she escaped to Philadelphia in 1849, leaving her family behind. Over the next decade, Tubman returned to Maryland at least 13 times, risking her life to guide about 70 enslaved people, including her family and friends, to freedom via the Underground Railroad. Her bravery earned her the nickname "Moses" among those she led to freedom.
