Wadia Institute of Himalaya geology couple of years ago decided to organise younge geoscience researcher meet, with the objective of exposing the young geoscience researchers to the fascinating world of Himalayan geology. The young researchers get an opportunity not only to interact with the experts on Himalayan geology and related subjects but are taken to the field in order to get the real essence of the landforms, structures and lithology.
This year during October 2024 WIHG decided to take them to Katra-Riasi sector as this area is considered seismologically active because the structure that led to the October 2005 devastation in Muzaffarabad Pakistan extends in this area as well and has preserved the geomorphic evidence of its multiple reactivation in the past.
Prof. V. C. Thakur, Prof Jayangondaperumal and M.A. Malik published an interesting paper in 2010 which for the first time not only reassigned the seismically active structure that caused the Muzaffarabad earthquake a new name viz. the Middlecot-Wadi Thrust (MWT), but traced it from Jhelum to Yamuna River. For more detail viewers are requested to see the following reference.
