MADISONVILLE, Ohio (WKRC) - A new building with old roots opened Friday in a neighborhood on the rise. The Madisonville community is seeing a lot of redevelopment.
A bright blue house, the recently restored Metz House, on Madison Road drew quite a crowd Friday. Dr. Charles Metz, known as Mr. Madisonville in the 19th and 20th centuries, was a famed archeologist, civic giant and physician. On Friday, some of his descendants posed for pictures in front of his former home and even brought back the original doctor’s office sign that hung in his window.
"It's such an amazing thing to be here. I honestly thought that this house was headed for the wrecking ball,” said Michael Berger, a great-grandson who traveled from Minnesota for the dedication.
The house was saved thanks in part to the Madisonville Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation. Manager Matt Strauss says they're involved in so many new builds, like the business district’s main project at Madison and Whetsel roads, that it's hard to keep track.
"There's so many things going on right now, and that's just the stuff that we're doing. There are so many other people investing as well," Strauss said.
"So our family...had a supermarket for 85 years in this community,” said Liz Field. She is one of those people investing.
For 10 years, Field's been working to build The Cheesecakery. Just two weeks ago, she opened a cafe in the neighborhood she loves.
"I think it's amazing; it's so awesome because I've been here, like, my whole life and just seeing the transformation over the few years has been incredible," said Field.
One of the most unique transformations has happened back at the Metz House. The inside has been restored, keeping the antique fireplaces, door handles and Rookwood tile. That keeps the charm from 130 years ago alive.
Built in 1890, the Metz House is now office space that's available to rent. Madisonville will have a lot of rent, buy or lease options available as the revitalization of an old Cincinnati neighborhood continues.
Bad Tom Smith Brewing is planning on moving to the historic bank building in Madisonville. It'll be a restaurant and taproom.
