Sand Martins are small migratory birds known for nesting in colonies. They dig their burrows into steep, sandy cliffs or riverbanks, and build their nests at the tunnel's end. The burrows can reach up to a metre in length. Sand Martins are social birds and prefer to nest close to one another in colonies. The colony size can vary from only a few pairs to several hundred.
Nests are constructed from vegetation and feathers, providing a soft and insulated environment for the eggs. The female typically lays 4 or 5 eggs, with both parents taking turns to incubate them. The chicks usually hatch after about two weeks and fledge approximately three weeks later. Sand Martins usually raise two broods each breeding season before migrating south to spend the winter months in regions where food is more plentiful.
