Author and wordsmith Kel Richards says the word “lieutenant” originally came into the English language from the French.
“It means a placeholder. The first syllable means place and tenant means someone who holds a place,” Mr Richards told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
“There was a conscious decision in America by Noah Webster once again, the man who revolutionised the language in America, to say we’re going to say it the way it’s spelt.”
Mr Richards said this is why there is a difference between the Australian and American pronunciation of the word.
