মহালয়ার (Mahalaya) দিন পিতৃপক্ষের (Pitri Paksha) অবসান হয়ে, মাতৃপক্ষ (Matri Paksha) শুরু হয়। সেদিনই আক্ষরিক অর্থে দুর্গাপুজোর (Durga Puja) সূচনা হয়। কথিত আছে মহালয়ার দিন অসুর ও দেবতাদের মধ্যে সংঘর্ষ হয়েছিল। এই মহালয়ার গুরুত্ব হিন্দু ধর্মে অনেক।

What is the story behind Mahalaya?

Mahalaya depicts the first alarm of Ma Durga's arrival on Earth. She comes right from Goddess's In-law's house, Kailash. This is the day when every single Bengali would hear the soul stirring melody of Birendra Krishna Bhadra. He describes the history of Mahalaya with the broadcast of ' Mahisasur Mardini'.


What are the rituals in Mahalaya?

Rituals and celebrations:

On this day, people perform Tarpan and Shraddh dedicated to their deceased ancestors. Food, clothes and footwears are offered to the souls of the deceased ancestors through priests and brahmins. Brahmins are also given food and dakshina on this day.


What to do during Mahalaya?

Water, flowers, milk, holy waters of Ganga and black sesame seeds should be offered to a peepal tree while remembering the ancestors. One should ask for apology for mistakes committed and seek blessings from one's forefathers.
