Shymkent is the biggest city in South Kazakhstan with a population of 1.1 million people. The Chimkent lead and zinc refining and smelting center began operating in 1934. It utilized ore from the South and East of Kazakhstan and produced approximately 70% of the Soviet Union's lead. The production of lead continued at full scale through 2008, when it decreased significantly due to economic reasons. Chimkent lies within city limits and is closely flanked by the Badam River, posing significant environmental and public health impacts.
Petr Sharov, our partner at the Environmental Health & Pollution Management Institute (EHPMI), discusses the levels of lead the team found at a playground near the lead and zinc smelter.
