St James is a town in northern Victoria, Australia. The town is located in the Shire of Moira local government area, 238 km (148 mi) north of the state capital, Melbourne.
The name came from a pastoral station. In 1855 the holder of the Cobram station divided it into two, naming the new portion St James. Later St James was the name given to the local parish.
The first selection of land in the St James area was thought to be in 1870.
In 1883 the railway line from Benalla, destined to terminate at Yarrawonga, was built as far as St James. It remained thus for three years before being completed.
Today the Oaklands railway line continues to Yarrawonga and across the border to Oaklands in New South Wales.
St James is situated in a flat landscape, there being no significant stream or waterway; the temporary railway terminus was the motive for the township. A school was opened in 1884. Ten years later St James had five hotels, two bank branches, two churches, two stores and a creamery.
In 1892 a storekeeper, George Coles, bought a shop in St James and another in Lake Rowan, 6 km eastwards on the road between Benalla and Yarrawonga. Three years later he built a family home in St James. In 1910 his son, George junior, after having worked for several rural and Melbourne retailers, acquired the St James business, which was the genesis of the G.J. Coles and Co chain of variety stores. Coles ‘North Eastern Store’ was in the main street a few doors east of the railway crossing.
St James Post Office opened on 10 July 1899.
The main farming activity in the St James district is wheat growing. There are large silos at the railway station, and bunkers at Lake Rowan to hold excess quantities. The Grain Corp Silos at St James has a history dating back as far as the 1915-16 wheat season when 135,000 bags (405,000 bushels) were recorded as being delivered to the railway station. A record that was only exceeded once in the 1962-63 season when 421,439 bushels was delivered. This was an amazing achievement as transport was mostly by horse and wagon at the time.
Telephone was connected in 1910-11 Water in 1909.Electricity 14/02/1940 The School closed in 1993, the Post Office in 2010 and the Tennis Club in 2012. Town water was fluoridated in 2008.
St James Football Club had many successes and among those footballers were two St James boys who both helped coach St James and became Carlton Captains….Jim Flynn – Played first with Geelong 1897 to 1902 then with Carlton 1903 to 1908 & 1910….Captain of Carlton 1905 – 1907 & 1910 taking them to Premiership 1906 to 1908….Gordon Green – played with Carlton 1911 to 1921, Captain 1921.
