In this video, I’m showing the ii-V-i progression in a minor key (here, Cm), featuring three different variations on the tonic chord’s color tones.
The ii chord is always half-diminished with a 9th, the V chord is always a dominant 7 with a flat 9, while the tonic chord varies as follows:
a) tonic chord with minor 7 & 9
b) tonic chord with 6 & 9
c) tonic chord with maj7 & natural 9
Of course, the choice of which one to use depends on the composer or performer, the style of the music, personal preference, desired expressiveness, and the melody.
It’s also possible to color the V chord differently—for example, by using a flat 13 (Eb) instead of the fifth (D), or by trying sus chords. Regarding the ii chord, the 9th is usually flat (Eb), but it can also be natural (E), especially when coming from a phrase using the C major scale. For example, if you come from a phrase in the key of C major and want to play a ii-V-i leading to C minor, the Dm7b5 with a natural 9 might sound better than with a flat 9. Ultimately, it depends on the melodic and expressive context.
Which ending do you like best, even just “in theory”? Let me know!
