Chest pain doesn’t always mean a heart attack — and science backs this up! ❤️
According to the American College of Cardiology (2021), only about 5–15% of chest pain cases in emergency departments are due to heart attacks (myocardial infarction). The rest come from non-cardiac causes — many of which are treatable and harmless if identified correctly.
Here are some of the most common reasons for chest pain:
1. Musculoskeletal causes:
Strained chest muscles or inflammation of the rib cartilage (costochondritis) can cause sharp, localized pain that worsens with movement or deep breathing.
2. Acid reflux or GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease):
Burning sensation in the middle of the chest after eating spicy or heavy food? That’s often acidity — not your heart.
3. Anxiety or Panic Attacks:
Stress and anxiety can mimic cardiac pain with tightness, rapid heartbeat, and breathlessness.
4. Lung-related issues:
Conditions like pleurisy, pneumonia, or even a small pulmonary embolism (clot) can trigger chest pain.
5. Postural Dysfunction:
Poor posture from desk jobs can strain chest and back muscles, leading to pain that feels deep but isn’t cardiac in origin.
⚠️ When to take chest pain seriously:
If pain feels like pressure or heaviness in the center of the chest
Spreads to arm, jaw, or back
Comes with sweating, nausea, or shortness of breath
Occurs during exertion
If these signs appear — don’t ignore, act fast. 🏥
