D’amor per te languisco, Wq. 213
Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach (1714-1788)
I languish for you from a love which shreds my heart,
But I do not dare tell you, beloved, that I burn for you.
I marvel when I see you and cease my suffering,
But then I sigh with lovesickness and once again feel great torment.
Neither by night nor day do I know any peace,
For that gentle face has made me its prisoner.
You guide my thoughts, you reign in my heart -
Will it be in vain that I hope you burn with an equal fire?
When far from you, life holds for me no sweetness,
But near you, it is full of joy and pleasure.
End my torments; comfort a faithful heart;
Tell me that it is love you feel;
I will ask nothing else of you.
