There are many beautiful and lyrical pieces composed in the key of D flat major and this Nocturne is one of them.
Some people think of Cziffra as the the ultimate coruscating virtuoso whose Liszt playing set concert halls aflame especially in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
However, as with all great artists there was another side to his art and here we listen engrossed in Cziffra's poetry and lovely cantabile tone quality.
When Cziffra made his concert debut at the Royal Festival Hall London in September 1957, critics praised his transcendental variety of touch as much as his stupendous virtuosity. He gave many encores and both the audience and orchestra cheered and applauded for over twenty minutes.
