What is the magic and mystery of literature, what makes a person spend hours with a book, page after page, unable to stop reading? According to the British writer Ken Follett: ‘The story has to be good, the characters have to be believable, the themes have to interest people... but there is something more important in a good novel: that the reader feels what the characters feel’. This is how he defends the importance of emotion in books. The author of more than a dozen bestsellers and bestsellers such as ‘The Pillars of the Earth’ and ‘A World Without End’, Follett has won acclaim and awards all over the world. He was born into a family that loved books. As a child, he adored James Bond stories and read Shakespeare's plays.

The author of almost twenty historical novels, he says that ‘the most interesting things in history are the great changes, how and why they came about’. He adds: ‘The historical changes that interest me most are the ones that gave us freedoms. A great advocate of creative work, Ken Follett says that the magic of creative work is that sometimes the best results come from breaking the established rules: ‘We can teach artificial intelligence to write a novel. But we can't teach it to break the rules. That's the great power of creative work,’ he says. Follett has been described on more than one occasion as a born storyteller. His parents did not allow their children to watch television, so books became his greatest pleasure and the library his favourite place. He has received numerous awards and his works have been adapted for film, television and theatre. He is chairman of Dyslexia Action, a trustee of the National Literacy Trust, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and an Honorary Doctor of Literature from the University of Glamorgan in his native Wales.
