The Strange Situation is a standardized procedure devised by Mary Ainsworth in the 1970s to observe attachment security in children within the context of caregiver relationships.
The experiment consists of a 20-minute series of play, departure, and reunion episodes that use a minor threat (a brief separation from the caregiver) to assess the infant's attachment style to that specific caregiver.
