4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Murad Adaileh, secretary-general of the Islamic Action Front:
"In fact, this government never finds a solution to its economic crises, corruption and problems except in the pockets of the people by raising prices and raising taxes. Today, the people are very tired of this government policy. Today, the Jordanian is suffering severely as a result of the prices. The prices are suffocating the people because of the fuel taxes which reach up to 55% on some fuel derivatives. Today, the price of fuel has become the highest in the Arab world and one of the highest in the world. Therefore, the government must stop this approach and look for other options and not in the people's pockets."
5. Sign reading (Arabic): "Stop playing with the people's food, we don't have money"

7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Abdel-Majeed Dandees, member of the Popular Unity Party:

"Today's message is about the will of our people who reject impoverishment and starvation. The government does not make any consideration for the popular reaction, and is raising the prices of oil derivatives to deepen the general crisis that we are experiencing on all levels, the first of which is the crisis in the standards of living because of the low salaries and the erosion of incomes, the persistent budget deficit and rise in indebtedness. Despite that, the government is taking a measure of this kind to further restrict the people and their lives."

11. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Bahaa Ali, protester:
"The price hikes have become unbearable. I am not married, but the people are actually unable to spend on transportation from home to work, and from the workplace to home. On top of that, one has to pitch in with household expenses, family expenses and rent."

13. Sign reading (Arabic): "Keep your hands away from the poor people's pockets"
14. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Bahaa Ali, protester:
"We demand that the government change its political and economic approach, which is taking the country down an unknown path. Unbearably high prices, these prices hikes are the result of corruption and a corrupt political approach that does not find any solutions. There are no economic, political or social solutions. There must be basic solutions to solve the problem of price hikes."

LEADIN:
Jordanian demonstrators gathered in Amman on Friday to protest recent price hikes, which have made it difficult for ordinary Jordanians to make ends meet.
A years-long economic downturn, accelerated by the coronavirus pandemic, means more than half of young Jordanians are now unemployed and the country is sinking deeper into debt.
STORYLINE:
Jordanians demonstrated in downtown Amman after the weekly Friday noon prayers to decry the latest price hikes, which have led to a spike in the price of fuel, food and most goods.
The protesters have complained that the taxes on food items, fuel and telecommunications are already high and are calling on the government to protect people from the impact of the price surge.
