Welcome to our latest video, where we delve into the exquisite Manoir de Ban, the serene Swiss retreat and cherished home of Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin. Join us as we explore the rich history, stunning gardens, and the essence of Chaplin’s life at this elegant neoclassical manor, where he spent his final 25 years. Discover how this haven became a beloved sanctuary for Chaplin and his family and why it remains a must-visit destination today.
Charlie Chaplin, the legendary English comic actor and filmmaker known for his iconic character "The Tramp," holds a significant place in silent film history. In September 1952, during a trip to England to promote his comedy-drama "Limelight," Chaplin was advised by his half-brother to seek a new home in Switzerland due to the U.S. revoking his re-entry visa. In search of peace and neutrality, Chaplin found the enchanting Manoir de Ban, marking a dramatic shift from Hollywood’s bustling life to Switzerland’s tranquil countryside.
Chaplin purchased Manoir de Ban on December 31, 1952, for CHF 180,000 (about $41,000). In his 60s, he chose to exile himself in Switzerland with his family, unable to return to America for over 20 years. Nestled in Corsier-sur-Vevey, amid the Lavaux vineyards, Lake Geneva, and the Swiss Alps, the manor's charm is as captivating as its history.
Originally built by Charles-Emile Henry de Scherer and later transformed into the grand estate it is today, the manor was renamed "Manoir de Ban" in 1946 by American diplomat Grafton Winthrop Minot and his wife Anne de Lancey. Designed by Riviera’s star architect Philippe Franel in 1840, the 14-hectare (35-acre) estate features a grand façade with fluted pilasters and intricately decorated windows, showcasing classical elegance in a serene natural setting.
The manor includes 19 rooms over three levels, featuring an elegant entrance hall, a spacious dining room ideal for Chaplin’s gatherings, a cozy sitting room reflecting his love for music, and a beautiful library where he penned his autobiography. The upper floors house several authentically decorated bedrooms, while the basement, once used for wine production, was repurposed as archives for Chaplin’s works.
Beyond the main house, the estate features outbuildings like a farm and a garage. The farm, predating the manor, was adapted over time for staff accommodation, storage, and as a barn and stables. The garage, built in 1900 and renovated around 1980, accommodates three vehicles and includes staff quarters on the upper floor.
The estate’s park, covering nearly 35 acres, gently descends towards the Veveyse and Nant streams. The meticulously maintained lawns and diverse collection of exotic trees—including sequoias, beeches, spruces, elms, maples, and cedars—add to its enchanting beauty.
Today, Manoir de Ban serves as Chaplin’s World Museum, which opened on April 17, 2016, following a 15-year project dedicated to preserving and celebrating Charlie Chaplin’s legacy.
