Mohana Rāgālapanā on Violin | Mahavadi Vasu Viswanadha Sastry
Hyderabad Thyagaraja Aradhana Music Festival – CCRT, Hyderabad
This video presents a soulful excerpt of Mohana Rāgālapanā rendered on the violin by Mahavadi Vasu Viswanadha Sastry during the vocal concert of Vid. B. Vidya Sagar, with excellent rhythmic support from Aravind Kundurti on Mridangam and Vidwan T.P. Balasubramanian on Ghatam. The concert was beautifully organised by the Hyderabad Thyagaraja Aradhana Music Festival in association with Sanskriti Foundation at CCRT, Hyderabad, and unfolded with great musical depth and energy.
Mohana Rāgam is one of the most celebrated pentatonic ragas in Carnatic music, derived from the 28th Melakarta Harikambhoji. With its serene and uplifting structure (S R₂ G₃ P D₂ S / S D₂ P G₃ R₂ S), it evokes devotion, joy, and a sense of grandeur. Its universal appeal makes it easily appreciated by listeners across the world, transcending cultural and musical boundaries.
The style of violin playing presented here is a treasured learning received from my revered Guru, Late Sri Akella Mallikarjuna Sharma garu. This approach is rooted in the legendary Parur bani, developed by the iconic violin maestro Vid. Parur M.S. Gopalakrishnan. The Parur style is known for its unique fusion of Carnatic and Hindustani aesthetics, remarkable bowing technique, speed, precision, and the ability to bring out a vocal-like expression on the violin while maintaining tonal clarity and depth.
This performance reflects the essence of that tradition — blending classicism, emotion, and technical finesse in the exploration of Mohana Rāgam.
“Every raga has a soul; through the violin, we strive to give it a voice that resonates across hearts and borders.”
